We are very fortunate at the EcoCentre to have at our distinctive building artistic contributions from two very well known local artists.
The most recent addition is the mosaic at our front door. This was designed by Jen Gay and most of it was put together by visitors to the Kaitaia Arts & Crafts Fair in October 2017 under her guidance. It was completed at the EcoCentre and set in place over the following few weeks. Jen has contributed a number of mosaics around Kaitaia, mostly community projects. Her watery design fits in well with the murals above it.
The murals, both around the ‘lighthouse tower’ and on the playground side of the building were created in 2014 by artist Theresa Reihana along with students from Te Kura Kaupapa Māori o Pukemiro, Taipa Area School and Te Rangi Aniwaniwa. Using the theme of kaitiakitanga, stewardship/guardianship of the environment they drew on the Māori creation legend of Ranginui and Papatuanuku as well as imagery from both land and sea. Funded by the Creative Communities Scheme the murals were part of a competition open to all secondary schools in the area.
